Island Games preview Ameline will lead charge

When the Cayman cyclists line up at the Island Games in the Isle of Wight on Saturday they will have a strong team capable of bringing home some silverware.

Team manager is the very experienced Barry Jones who is still a top competitor in local races. His team comprises of the highly promising junior Michael Testori plus the seasoned veterans Michele Smith, Jerome Ameline and TJ Olivier.

Frenchman Ameline is probably the most experienced of the bunch and big things are expected of him, although Smith has had some notable victories in recent races.

“We expect the senior guys to show themselves well as they are top performers both locally and abroad,” said Jones. “The competition should be stiff however as some of the other teams will have guys some of whom are pretty much semi-pros.

“Cycling was left out of the last Island Games and this time we are hoping to groom Michael to participate in future Games and while these Games are no stroll it is a good opportunity for him to experience this level of competition with an experienced team as there are technically no qualifying standard. Hopefully, we will get a good indication at upcoming Cayman Challenge Cycle Series where we have a team from Jamaica and Canada coming to participate.”
