Should the airport be privatised?

Students to debate topic.

The ins and outs of the thorny topic of airport privatisation will be debated at the University College of the Cayman Islands on Wednesday, 22 June.

The pros and cons will be discussed by Edward Jerrard, lecturer in Air Transport Management and Gilbert McLean starting at 6pm.

“Whilst the discussion is principally for students attending the Air Transport Management program, an invitation is extended to anyone associated with the industry in the Cayman Islands and the general public. Such real life discussions form a central part of the air transport management course,” said Carolyn Mathews of the university.

The management course has grown in stature and takeup, which reflects the importance of air transport to the economic growth of the Cayman Islands, she added.

International accreditation

The university is discussing how Cayman can develop as a centre for air transport management training locally, regionally and internationally. Talks are taking place with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands and the International Air Transport Association as to how the university can become an official training centre.

That would mean that the university could ryn air transport association’s accredited courses such as travel and tourism, air cargo, revenue management and other programs. Courses would run between three and five days and would impact the tourism community in general, said the university, because foreign participants would need accommodation and transport and would be likely also to visit restaurants and tourist attractions whilst in Cayman.
