Brigade leaders’ new role model

More than 50 Cayman Girls Brigade leaders now have a better understanding of using Jesus as a role model for leadership in the 21st Century.

The “Jesus encounter” workshops were held at the Savannah United Church recently with guest speaker Hee Piang Chin, Girls Brigade International president, using Ken Blanchard’s Lead like Jesus programme. Mr. Blanchard is the author of the popular One Minute Manager and other books on management methods.

Ms Piang Chin was invited to host the programme in Cayman after a few local Brigade members attended her conference in Malaysia. She said the leaders’ programme was adopted in Singapore in 2004 because they felt the need to do a bit more for over 4,000 Girl Brigadiers involved in the leadership skills programme there.

“The Lead Like Jesus encounter is very different from other workshops I’ve attended on leadership as it presented Jesus Christ as a role-model for every leader and defined the role of leadership as, ‘Any time you seek to influence the thinking, behaviour and development of others,’” said Betty Ebanks.

“The method of presentation was very exciting and interactive, while at the same time it challenged participants through introspection,” she said.

Although locally it was held primarily for Girls Brigade officers and church leaders, the programme could be used for any group of individuals, organisers said, including those in the corporate arena, as it encourages participants to apply the concepts into every sphere of their daily life.

“I certainly am grateful to have participated in this unique experience as I have learned so much about being a ‘servant leader’ through focusing on the life of the greatest leader of all time, Jesus Christ,” said Ms Piang Chin.

“The programme is able to equip officers in a more rounded way about leadership the Christian way,” she added.

“Every girl is a leader, so if we want to grow leaders we need to start their growth in leadership.” she said.

Ms Paing Chin went on to say that without going through the process of building their own inner capacity, character and trustworthy relationships, leaders will face problems in the long run.

Six people who participated in the Lead Like Jesus Encounter were also trained as facilitators and will be running the encounter programme locally in the future.
