Demonstrations hurting our image

The recent public demonstrations may be harmful to the Cayman Islands; especially its economy, which is already damaged by the excessive debt and past deficits and failure to meet the prudent limits set by the law here (which gives the United Kingdom the right to intervene).

The democratic right to public demonstration should be used as one of the last resorts. Internationally the demonstration may be associated with instability in a world where recently governments have been removed by demonstrations and riots.

However, political parties and a new Constitution entrenching political parties and giving vast powers to the Government will continue to use more extreme methods to achieve their political and other aims. Under the old constitution with mostly independent ministers and legislators (who had audited accounts and stayed within the Public Finance and Management Law’s prudent financial limits), public demonstrations were rarely used.

The political parties should be working together for the good of the Cayman Islands and its people rather than fighting politically and possibly harming Cayman.

  1. I agree with Mr. John McLean and Mr. Truman Bodden:
The Cayman Islands facing dire economical times should realize that showing a divided Government by marching will only show the world, whom we depend on, Cayman has no stability, so stay away Investors, better look at other still positive looking Islands for your funds. For anybody to believe that Cayman could function within its own resources, having its own local investors such a person will have a very rude awakening. Before you follow the crowd be sure you know what you want to accomplish.

  2. Demonstrations do not hurt any sort of international credibility, rather they are a sign of a healthy democracy where freedom of speech is assumed to be the law of the land.

Crime and official corruption, on the other hand…

We agree imagecayman that Cayman cannot go it alone and needs international investment, but really, what image would you care to project?

    A. A vibrant politically active society
    or
    B. We don’t talk about things like that…
