Local autocross recently proved it could excel on drag racing’s stomping ground.
For the first time this season, the Cayman Motorsports Association’s monthly Time Attack meet was held at Breaker’s Speedway. The turnout of spectators was great and the machinery on display was impressive.
Some of the regulars came out such as the Automotive Art Volvo sedan and Marcus Huggins in his dad Gary’s Kimmar Distributors Toyota Starlet. However they were some familiar faces in new rides. Jimel McLean wrung the neck out of his newly acquired Honda Civic to take third in the two-wheel drive class. Having completed the car at 4am the night before the event, gremlins crept up that kept him from running his best, but he never backed down.
The intermittent rain hampered the day’s progress. Though son Marcus raced on the day, Gary Huggins would provide some entertaining driving in his attempt to dry out the track. Nevertheless the rain meant that some of the unlimited class cars couldn’t get traction from their R compound tires.
Ultimately the rain wasn’t a problem for Keith ‘Speedy’ Tibbetts III in the Valvoline Subaru Impreza Sti, who was absolutely flying all afternoon in the wet and the dry. Tibbetts III won the unlimited class by almost seven seconds and claimed the battle round.
