Male gymnastics has a bright future in Cayman, as evidenced by its showing at an international event.
The Motions Unlimited boys gymnastics team recently competed in the American Athletic Union National Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Disney World.
All of the boys were competing within the level four category within their age groups under the guidance of Coach Sorin Rad. Christopher Touhey placed first in the vault event and second on the floor, pommel horse and parallel bars. With an all-round personal best score of 88.10, Chris finished second overall in the all-round category.
Mikhail Grant had three second place finishes on the pommel horse, rings, and high bars. With an all-round score of 88.60 he also placed second in his age group. Igor Maghalhaes won his division overall after impressive first place finishes on the pommel horse and parallel bars. Igor’s overall score of 89.35 secured him the all-round first place and an impressive final total. Keifer Ebanks had first place finishes on the pommel horse and high bars and amassed an overall total of 86.55 which placed him first in the all-round category.
Overall the boys team secured medal positions in every discipline making Coach Sorin Rad extremely proud. The AAU Nationals is one of the largest competitions annually and attracts teams from all over the US. The boys team will be heading off for more competitions later this year and in 2012, with their sights set on more accolades.
