Local women’s softball has a new champion.
The Cayman Islands Softball Association recently wrapped up their 2011 female fast pitch season. The result is that CNB/APS Security Team Xtreme are the new champions.
Team Xtreme earned the honour by beating the Caledonian Wildcats in a best-of-three series. It would end up being a two-game sweep as Team Xtreme won by scores of 14-9 and 7-6. Leading the way was veteran player Carneth Thomas, who showed tremendous focus and determination.
During the regular season the Wildcats remained at the top of the standings. However, in order to make it to the finals they had a fierce one-game playoff with the fourth seed Western Union/National Concrete Challengers. Meanwhile the second and third seeds, namely Team Xtreme and Cayman Auto Diagnostic Clinic Stingers, battled it out.
The Cayman Islands Softball Association would like to express their most sincere thanks to female sponsors Cayman National Bank, APS Security, Caledonian, Cayman Auto Diagnostic Clinic, Western Union and National Concrete.
It should be noted that the male fast pitch league is ongoing. The season wraps up in September with matches taking place every Sunday at 2.30pm in West Bay.
After the conclusion of both competitions, Cayman’s fast pitch sluggers will tackle a major regional competition. A Cayman men’s and women’s team will take part in the Nicaraguan International Softball Tournament, being held this year in Corn Island, Nicaragua 3-5 September.
