Hurricane-safe parking offered at Camana Bay

Grand Cayman residents can now make arrangements to park their vehicles away from the threat of storm surge waters if a hurricane approaches.

Camana Bay is offering a limited number of spots in its Solaris Parking Garage to residents who register for the programme and pay a $100 fee, which covers the entire hurricane season.

Derek Haines, the senior manager for health, safety and security for Dart Cayman, said it was essential for residents to have a plan for their vehicles as part of their hurricane season preparations.

“Anyone on island during Hurricane Ivan would remember just how many cars were lost during the storm,” Mr. Haines said. “By pre-booking a space at Camana Bay, you are effectively buying an insurance policy for your vehicle, so that when a storm approaches you are guaranteed a safe place to park it on high ground.”

Due to the limited number of secure parking spaces available, Dart Realty is offering them to the public on a first come, first served basis.

“The owner of the vehicle must complete a form that provides details on their vehicle as well as a waiver,” Mr. Haines said.

“Once we have received this, along with payment, we will give the owner a tag for their vehicle along with instructions on where and when they can drop their vehicle off should a storm approach our area.”

Mr. Haines said owners will not be able to access their vehicle once it has been dropped off.

“We are expecting a large volume of cars – several hundred – so it will take time to transport all of them in and then back out again after the ‘All Clear’ has been given,” he said. “We literally park them end-to-end, up and down the ramps of the garages.”

Residents should also be aware that they need to have their own transportation arranged to take them back home or to a shelter after they drop their vehicle off at Camana Bay.

To request a registration form, please email Michelle Durrant at [email protected] The signed and completed forms along with the nonrefundable payment of $100 can be dropped off at Dart Realty’s offices located off of Forum Lane at Camana Bay or mailed to PO Box 31135, Grand Cayman, KY1-1205.
