Fresh Air Fund trip delights kids in NY

Caymanian youngsters visited New York City as part of the Fresh Air Fund 2011.

The seven children visited the Bronx Zoo, took in a Broadway show – Mary Poppins – did some sightseeing and visited Governor’s Island while in the city.

At the camp itself, they took in activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, drama, dance, cooking/culinary arts, creative writing and team-building games and sports tournaments.

Polite and open

According to camp directors of the Fresh Air Fund, the kids were polite, open to the experience and eager to learn new things.

“This was a fantastic summer for everyone. We hope we will be able to continue this partnership with the Department of Tourism,” said Elizabeth Clardy, Fresh Air Fund director, community outreach and support services.

The Fresh Air Fund was established in 1877 to provide free summer vacations to thousands of New York City children and intends to open their horizons by enabling them to experience new environments and cultures. The Department of Tourism, Cayman Airways and Fresh Air Fund have partnered since 2007, and during 2010 five Caymanian children aged 10 to 12 were hosted at FishKill camps with New York kids visiting Cayman and being hosted by island families.

This year’s Caymanian participants included Jonassi McLean, Anthony Penock, Charlee Walton, Tiana Smith, Athena Smith, Tiona Miller and Destinie Bush. They were escorted by Rhonda Cornwall and Gary Dominguez of the Department of Tourism and while in Manhattan all stayed at the Marriott Marquis.
