The creative videos of two young Caribbean videographers landed them the roles of ambassadors who spread the message of safer sex in the region.
PSI/Caribbean, a non-profit organisation operating in 12 Caribbean countries to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS, launched its Brand Ambassador competition called “Talk Nah! Say what you have to say” during the carnival celebrations in Trinidad and Tobago – Bacchanal in March.
Ahmad Muhammed from Trinidad and Tobago and Nissa Williams from Dominica were chosen from 14 submissions sent in during three months of competition, during which nearly 30,000 fans voted on the submitted three-minute videos, and the two were appointed brand ambassadors for the Got it? Get it. safer sex brand, which promotes condom use and highlights youth sexuality issues.
The pair travelled with the Got it? Get it. crew to carnival in St. Lucia to spread the message about safer sex and the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.
“We wanted to engender a sense of advocacy among today’s youth. We hope that our Brand Ambassadors will be a catalyst for change in their communities. Indeed, worldwide, many in our field believe that today’s generation has the power to end HIV/AIDS. With that in mind the idea of the Brand Ambassador was born,” said Kerry Singh, PSI/Caribbean’s marketing director.
Their experience is being turned into a documentary to help raise awareness and bring an end to HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, organisers said. The documentary will be released by the end of this year on regional and local TV stations.
