Television dive show to film in Cayman

Cayman’s pristine waters and teeming marine life draw multitudes of visitors yearly, but for those who can’t get here physically, there’s a regular stream of television shows ready to fill the gaps. The latest crew to visit was Another Shade of Blue, On Assignment with Ty Sawyer. The show follows the adventures of the diver and adventure photojournalist on assignment worldwide – including a visit to the Cayman Islands for a story.

Bill Wright of Wright Productions said the programme has visited locations in Hawaii, French Polynesia, Southern California and Key West.

“In each location Ty is trying to capture the essence of the location but in a timeframe as he has deadlines within which to get his assignment completed and back to his freelance clients,” Mr. Wright said. “We came up with the title because everywhere we seemed to go on location the water and sky were a different shade of blue. Obviously, what comes to mind there is Cayman Islands. My wife and I came on honeymoon after we’d read about it in different diving magazines. We just had to go there. It’s also the home of Guy Harvey who Ty knows pretty well so we wanted to chronicle what he is doing to preserve marine life and his artwork.”

While on island, the team will be going tag fishing, studying stingrays and visiting the Kittiwake.

“We will dive the Kittiwake with Nancy Easterbrook and then chronicle the mooring ball placement activities with Steve Broadbelt. Our show always tries to take an environmentally-positive standpoint and let people know they do not have to drop anchor,” Mr. Wright said. “We also know about the lionfish invasion and that divemasters are collecting them so we are going to try and have a collection and cookoff smackdown with some noted chefs on the island, talk about some pirate history and maybe go treasure searching above and below water. You never know what you might find.”

Mr. Sawyer added that as a diver it was great for him to return to Cayman.

“I’ve been travelling here since 1983, and have stepped ashore so many times I’ve lost count, so each trip feels like a homecoming to me,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to do a Cayman episode since we started shooting the Another Shade of Blue, On Assignment with Ty Sawyer. “I’m glad all the stars have aligned because I’m looking forward to sharing my love for this special corner of the blue world with a larger, and global audience. And, television is such a great storytelling medium. Even if we do half of what we have planned, I think it’s going to be an exciting episode.”
