Sunset House ups the stakes

One of the Cayman Islands’ long-established hotel and dive facilities is undergoing a revamp.

The $200,000 upgrades to the ocean side rooms at Sunset House will be finished by the end of September, explained general manager Ken Thompson.

“There are 22 rooms in the ocean view portion of the property, which has 53 rooms in total. We are in the process of completely gutting the bathrooms, tiling throughout, new granite counters, a paint job and a total rework.

“The bedrooms will get new ceiling fans, flat screen TVs, in-room safes, coffee makers, fridges, microwaves, a paint job and such to spruce it all up in general,” Mr. Thompson said.

The work is scheduled to be finished in late September with the resort reopening on 1st October. It is already fully-booked for then, said the general manager.

“We are pleased with where we are at right now,” he said. “September is traditionally a very slow time period throughout the Cayman Islands and this is no different which is why we have chosen to do this renovation work at this time. We do still have guests in house at the courtyard rooms but we are not interfering with the other guests.”

Value for money

2012 marks Sunset’s 53rd year as a hotel and 40th as Sunset Divers, Mr. Thompson said.

“Our clientele does not change a whole lot but like everybody they all want value for their dollars which is what we are trying to do,” Mr. Thompson said. “We have not raised our rates for 2012 even though our operating costs have gone up but we are upgrading and putting in facilities that people have come to expect in hotels these days. People want to know that we are current with our product offering and that they are getting value for money. We are a divers’ destination and the season moving forward in the fall looks promising – better than last year – and last year was OK.”
