Cancer fair drew crowds

Cancer may be a depressing subject, but there were lots of smiles, chat and laughter, as well as plenty of information garnered at the Cancer Society’s health fair last weekend.

The health fair, which is held every two years, was called Conquering Cancer II: Let’s Fight Cancer Together, and plenty of people who wanted to learn more about the disease and how to minimise their risks of it passed through the doors of the Marriott hotel to attend.

Minister of Health Mark Scotland proclaimed Saturday, 10 September, Cancer Awareness Day in Cayman.

Largest health fair to date

Jennifer Weber of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society said: “This health fair was the largest one to date and had the highest number of attendees ever.”

As well as more than 25 booths offering health checks, information on various kinds of cancers, healthy food and drinks and a plethora of other services, medical cancer experts held informative seminars and talks in two hotel suites throughout the morning and early afternoon.

“It went really well. There was a good turnout,” said Dr. Sook Yin, medical director of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, who was instrumental in organising the event.

Governor Duncan Taylor and his wife Marie–Beatrice were among the many visitors who browsed the exhibition booths.

Talks at the event included genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer; the latest in detection and treatment of lung cancer; diagnosis and stating of breast and colon cancer; tips to prevent cancer; breakthroughs in melanoma treatments; how to teach children about cancer prevention at a young age; managing thyroid cancer; achieving optimal digestive health; the development of breast cancer in Caribbean women; and reconstruction surgery for breast cancer patients.
