Ronnie has muscle

Most Cayman residents know Ronald Forbes is a fast man. What many may not realize is his father is equally quick on the track.

Locals should see Ronnie Forbes in action at Breakers Speedway next Sunday, 2 October. The North Side native is expected to be one of the featured racers at a upcoming drag meet put on by the Cayman Islands Drag Racing Association.

Forbes boasts a Mercedes Benz 500SL coupe with a Chevy engine. The car is a family project dedicated to Ronnie’s son Reuben Forbes, who passed away in a car accident back in 2009.

Drag racing association marketing and promotions director Michael Webster states Forbes has the potential to challenge the fastest cars in Cayman down the 1/8 mile track.

“If the track prep is good and he gets the tires down, watch out,” Webster said. “Once he gets grip then he can be the next driver in the five second range, guaranteed. His race with (association president) Sammy Jackson (and his Chevy Camaro) should be one to watch.”

Test and tune takes place from 12noon on 2 October with races starting from 3pm. Racers will be charged $25 with regular admission at $5 (a pit pass is available for $10). After the October event, the last race on the 2011 association calendar is on 4 December.
