A popular exercise programme for toddlers and young mothers is back on the sports scene.
Cayman Sports is once again hosting its Baby BuggyFit classes at Camana Bay and two extra morning sessions have been added. Buggy Fit is a fun, energizing fitness specialty class for mums and babies. Basically mums engage in an outdoor stroller fitness class where they bring their babies.
Cayman Sports owner and noted tennis player Warren Urquhart states the class is about maintaining fitness during early parenthood.
“We believe that mums and mums-to-be need to stay healthy and strong so they can be at their best for themselves and their families,” Urquhart said. “The goal is to share, inspire and encourage women to make fitness a priority in their life.”
Classes last between 45-50 minutes and are offered five mornings a week. The Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes are more advanced but all fitness levels are welcome. Tuesday and Thursday classes are for prenatal, postnatal and beginner exercisers. All classes start at 8am with participants meeting up in front of Hagen Daz. Wednesday class starts at 8.30am. Classes are held rain or shine and cost $130 for ten sessions (there is a drop-in fee of $15).
BabyBuggyFit is taught by Cayman Sports head trainer Lori Rye. She is pre and postnatal exercise certified, has taught BabyBuggyFit for 10 years and personal trained for 13 years throughout the Caribbean and Canada. Rye spoke about the pace of the classes.
“Each class starts with a warm-up and then progresses onto the main workout which is a mixture of fast walking or jogging for those that have been coming to the classes for a while,” Rye said.
“We then park up the prams and do a workout in front of the babies that will tone you up and work your heart and lungs using resistance bands and body weight. We work the legs, bum, tummy, shoulders and arms. When we have finished we have a cool down and stretch and then head off for a refreshing drink or coffee.
“The older babies seem to find BuggyFit fascinating and hilarious, watching carefully as Mum works out. The younger ones tend to find the movement makes them sleepy and they often stay in the pram throughout the workout. The older babies often get out of their prams when we are stationary and have a kick about on a blanket.”
