Greene targets female kickers

Local girls in the Under-15 age bracket have a fresh way to develop their football ability.

The Cayman Islands Girls Football Organization is looking for girls ages 4-12 who want to learn basic football skills. The organization is in its fifth year and was formed in partnership with the Be Active Programme of Generali.

The programme officially launches next Saturday, 1 October, at the George Hicks playing field. The initiative runs for 12 consecutive weeks and promotes football skills, teamwork and active living to a large group of eager participants from year to year.

Founder and head coach Sue Greene is looking forward to another season working with the young girls who have been an inspiration for her over the years.

“The purpose of this programme is to teach these girls the game, basic skills and to be confident with the ball,” Greene said. “It is intentionally set up like a 12-week camp, not a league. Each week we focus on a new skill and how it relates in a real game. The importance of being a team player is also stressed throughout the programme.

“We also encourage girls to work in pairs with someone they don’t know, from another school when we are doing our drills, so they make new friends! The hour-long sessions always conclude with games, with correctional guidance and plenty of positive reinforcement. The success of the programme and how much the girls learn and achieve towards the end of the 12 weeks keeps all of us coaches inspired!

“We have noticed through the years a lot of skill improvement for those girls who attend consistently and are pleased when we see the girls move on to play with the clubs here in Cayman or even on the national squad.”

The organization will see registration for its 12-week course next Saturday.

The fee is only CI$25, which includes a jersey. Each player should bring their own ball, a water bottle and have shin guards.

The fall season will go through Saturday, 17 December.
