King of the Beach to be crowned

Local beach volleyball is looking to generate momentum and keep enthusiasm high for the rest of the year.

Caymanian player Richard Campbell is serving as organizer for a monthly competition called ‘King of the Beach.’ The event, which takes place at Public Beach, sees its second instalment this Sunday, 25 September from 12noon until 4pm.

The tournament will use a doubles-style tournament which, Campbell states, awards players individually.

“The format is doubles though the prize is individual,” Campbell said. “Basically every player teams up with all of the other competitors once. The crown is awarded for the best record and stats in the tournament.

“We’re using referees from the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation like Fareed Hosein, who is the head referee and is in charge of the score keepers. It’s basically training for the other tournaments like the 2012 Olympic qualifiers and it keeps players in a competitive mind-set with the right attitude for those contests.”

The first match day was last month and the next two matches are scheduled for the last Sunday of the month. The initial sessions will run until November. Once the Christmas break is over, the plan is to resume in January or February 2012.

Campbell, who is also competing, states that already the games have garnered solid interest. A number of players are taking part and corporate support has come from Digicel, Corona and Funky Monkey. The George Town native states the tournament, which is sanctioned by the federation, is a positive.

“The competition is awesome because, as I said before, it keeps all of us on top of our games for international competitions. For me personally organizing is cool because I can deal with the administrative side of things for a change.”

The tournament comes after the last major happenings in June. Volleyball had a big presence at Jet Around Cayman and veteran Olney Thompson competed at the 2011 Island Games.
