Elite optimistic about chances

Elite Sports Club are the reigning champions of the Cayman Premier League.

With a host of squads adding key players, the West Bay side is aware staying on top will not be easy. After opening losses to George Town Sports Club (in the Charity Shield game) and Roma United, Elite is eager to play into October.

Among the team members eyeing the upcoming contests is captain Abijah Rivers. With a match this Sunday against fellow West Bay side Scholars International (tentatively scheduled for Sunday, 2 October, at 7pm at the Ed Bush field), Rivers is confident of victory.

“We are looking forward to putting the disappointment of our opener behind us,” Rivers said. “With the top sides all playing each other last weekend, we will look to gain ground on them and take all three points this Sunday.”

Rivers, who had a few key team-mates missing in the early contests, faces a Scholars team fresh off battling George Town. Scholars had a comfortable 5-2 win over Cayman Athletic in week one thanks to prized offseason acquisition and 2010 player of the year Carson Fagan. Former national team stand-out and new recruit Thomas Elliot states the side is coming together.

“We’re a new team, with a new faces, that are trying to form partnerships with the old core players of Scholars,” Elliot said. “It works in our favour as we have a lot of players working hard trying to establish themselves on the team and fighting for a starting position. In comparison, we know that George Town is a cultured team, with years of playing together to boast. Whatever the outcome, we’ll be up for the game and will be ready.”

George Town are left to tangle with Bodden Town this Sunday at 5pm at the TE McField Sports Centre (commonly called the Annex). Bodden Town are coming off a home game against a newly promoted Cayman Athletic side last weekend. Cayman Athletic face Roma at 7pm at the Annex while Tigers and Future do battle in West Bay at 5pm.
