Justice Quin gets time to write judgment
The trial of Leonard Antonio Ebanks for murder is scheduled to come to an end on Friday, when Justice Charles Quin delivers his judgment.
Ebanks, charged with the murder of Tyrone Burrell on 8 September, 2010, in a West Bay yard, elected to be tried by judge alone.
A judge hearing a matter without a jury is required to sum up the evidence, refer to the laws and legal principles that apply and then give full reasons for the conclusions he reaches.
Closing speeches in Ebanks’ trial took place last week Wednesday by Senior Crown Counsel Trevor Ward and on Thursday by defence attorney Martin Heslop. Justice Quin at that time said he did not know when he would finish writing his judgment.
He sat on Friday to hear numerous mentions and again on Monday for what was to be the start of a five-day trial on a charge of attempted murder.
However, Senior Crown Counsel John masters asked for an adjournment because one of the Crown witnesses was incarcerated and he had not had the opportunity to speak with him. He also noted that the defence had submitted a late alibi, which he needed to check into.
Mr. Masters asked for and was granted an adjournment until 28 September.
The trial, meanwhile, has been assigned to Justice Richard Williams, who took up his appointment to the Grand Court last week.
Justice Quin was given clear days on Tuesday and Wednesday before having a civil matter scheduled on Thursday.
Ebanks’ verdict is scheduled for 10am.
