The Stingray Swim Club hosted its traditional taster, a Burner Meet, to kick off the new swimming season.
They are called burners because the action is fast with the emphasis is on short races, having fun and participation. This year it was held on 30 September and combined with a membership drive for the club and the turnout, aided by free cake and great give-away prizes from LIME and Cayman Airways, was pleasing.
The swimmers turned out in force, the youngest being only four – and what a pleasure to see so many of the seniors taking part. One of them, Geoffrey Butler talked of how he had joined Stingray Swimming Club aged five and thanked the programme at the Lions Pool, the great coaching he had received and the club for helping him achieve all he has, culminating this year in participation at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Man, where he swam against the best young swimmers from great Britain and Australia.
The Stingray president Brenda McGrath spoke of the club’s plans for the year ahead and was full of praise for the swimmers and meet director Vicki Girling who said: “This has been a wonderful evening and a thrill to see so many of the more experienced swimmers here. We’ve had great racing, loud music and lots of fun. Can you think of a better way to kick off our season and show people what SSC is all about?”
Many people took the opportunity to re-join the Club or sign up for the first time and the culmination of the evening was the giving away of two great prizes generously given by two of swimming’s long-time supporters. First was a BlackBerry donated by LIME which went to Romilly Miller, and the second was a Cayman Airways ticket to Miami.
The Stingray Swim Club has an action-packed year ahead starting this week with a sprint meet on Saturday and the traditional Pirates Week Meet starting on 16 November. Registration for 2011-12 is already open.
