Foreigners eye marathon

International running clubs have set their sights on the Cayman Marathon.

The Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon attracted several hundred visitors to Cayman last year, with 200 overseas runners participating in the race plus their supporters on the sidelines. Organisers expect to see at least that number again this year as a result of commitments to participate from a couple of international running clubs and tour operators.

Team Diabetes, the activity club for the Canadian Diabetes Association, will be bringing a contingent of approximately 50 people who are running the race to raise funds for the provision of diabetes education and services in Canada. Run ‘n’ Fun, a tour operator out of Canada, has also confirmed a small group.

“We are so excited about having these groups join us this year,” said Race Director Rhonda Kelly. “Team Diabetes is an amazing fundraising organization that has done wonders for the fight against diabetes in Canada and we are so pleased that they have agreed to come and participate in our race.

“In fact they have already put us on their calendar for 2012 and so has Joints In Motion, the fundraising arm for The Arthritis Society in Canada who came last year with a group of 50 and had a fantastic experience. This will be Run ‘n’ Fun’s third year with us and although the group this year will not be as big as in previous years, we appreciate their consistency in getting the word out to Canadians about our race and putting our event on their running calendar.”

“Team Diabetes is thrilled to be coming to the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon,” said Fred DeFina, Director of Team Diabetes. “Our participation is the result of our relationship with the Cayman Islands Diabetes Association who, like us, is engaged in promoting awareness about diabetes at both the local and international level with the intention of one day finding a cure.

“World class events like the Cayman Islands Marathon provide our program participants with the unique opportunity to be active and experience a once in a lifetime destination, while raising funds for a cause that is very personal to them. Together we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of nine million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes.”

Kelly says the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism’s Canada office has been instrumental in marketing the event across that country, specifically at other races such as the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and the Army Run and Ottawa Marathons in Ottawa. The result has been a marked increase in runners from Canada. Kelly also credits the additional airline seats from Canada that Canadian-based airlines WestJet provides since it started flying to Cayman in November 2010.

“We are so grateful for the Department of Tourism’s support in providing marketing opportunities for our race, and facilitating our relationships with some of these groups. We hope to increase the profile of our race, and see a lot more fundraising groups such as Team Diabetes and Joints In Motion join us as a result of this successful partnership with the Department of Tourism.

“It is about building momentum and consistency with these groups. If they have good experiences they will grow their group and also spread the word to other clubs and organisations.”
