Next month the Cayman Islands are expected to host an inventive basketball competition.
Governor’s Square is slated to stage a three-on-three hoops tournament on Saturday, 5 November. Next weekend’s event, being put on by the Cayman Islands Basketball Association, is expected to take place in the parking lot from 9am.
Technical director for Cayman basketball Victor ‘Voot’ O’Garro states the matches are about promoting the sport.
“This hasn’t been done in a long time,” O’Garro said. “The last time it was done was years ago in the Wendy’s parking lot (on West Bay Road). It’s about taking the game to the public and getting the game more exposure.”
The unique tournament is being split up into four categories: adult men, adult women, over 40 males and over 30 females. There are also slated to be three-point and free-throw shooting competitions. Prize money will be offered in each segment with first place nabbing $400 and second taking home $200.
O’Garro states the contests are being geared to older players in order to highlight local basketball talent.
“We’re starting with the older ones as we want to showcase a high level of talent. We also want to incorporate a corporate segment and that segment would be co-ed.”
Among the sponsors for the tournament are the Ministry of Sports, Cost-U-Less, Strategic Risk Solutions, Popeyes and X107.1FM.
Registration fee is $30 per player and there is a maximum of four people per team. For more information e-mail [email protected]basketball.org
