Viv Rankine darts to Corner Pocket

One of Cayman’s biggest darts tournaments is still on track.

The Vivian Rankine memorial darts tournament is slated for 5-6 November. Corner Pocket will once again serve as venue. The event is in memory of Vivian Rankine, a former police officer and darts aficionado who passed away over a decade ago in 1998.

Tournament organizer Martin Bodden stays the festivities will have a sombre tone.

“We will all be wearing black ribbons on our playing shirts in memory of Trevor Lloyd,” Bodden said. “In fact Hank ‘The Hammer’ Ebanks is in Barbados with Cayman Islands Darts Association vice president Frankie Martyr for a tournament in Trevor’s honour this weekend. I send my best wishes to them. Also former darts player Arch Dixon passed on this week so we will be playing with heavy hearts.”

Tournament registration takes place at 12noon on Saturday, 5 November with matches starting from 1pm. The format for games will be 501 (where players throw to reduce their score from that number to zero) and encompass singles and doubles divisions.

The tournament is a staple on the local darts scene and as such attracts top players like Mel Tagalog, last year’s winner. Bodden states he expects a high turnout of competitors, especially in light of recent developments in the sport.

“I’m hoping and expecting a good turnout. Darts Association president Paul Anglin has been doing a good thing at the Grand Caymanian resort with darts. He’s gotten many new players and Filipinos to play darts. I’m hoping to see some of those guys come out and do their thing at the Vivian Rankine tournament.

“I’m looking for a large turnout (of veteran players). Guys like Rodan (Asuncion) and Earl (Smith) I would like to see come out and do their thing.”
