Reef starts with triple success

The first road race events to be held in East End in recent times was an overall success last week. The races were a huge success with over 70 participants arriving at The Reef to take part in the 30km solo race, the 3 x 10km relay race and the 5km fun run.

Scott Ruby won the men’s 30km and Caroline Cahill won the women’s version on 30 October.

Organisers of Race Caribbean attribute much of the success to the sponsor, The Reef, which gave preferential rates, food and refreshments to all entrants and families, along with the many volunteers including The Cayman Islands Cadet Corps, The Cayman Islands Athletic Association and The Red Cross.

Chief organiser Derek Larker, said: “A special thank you goes to His Excellency The Governor, Duncan Taylor, who kindly agreed to be the official race starter and further assisted in the prize giving.” The Governor also ran in the 5km and won it!

Larner added: “The participation was encouraging considering that this was the first of many planned future events. The ambitious task of combining three separate events at the same time, the East End location and the poor weather leading up to it made it difficult. The Reef is an excellent location to host an event of this nature. Roads in the area have a good running surface, are free from heavy traffic and offer spectacular coastal views.”
