Elite close the gap on Scholars

Scholars International are still unbeaten in the Premier League after seven matches but champions Elite came within one point of them with another convincing win.

At the TE McField Annex on Sunday, Elite’s prolific striker Dwayne ‘Gaza’ Wright hit his 11th goal of the season which includes three hat-tricks against George Town who had spurned earlier chances by Tex Whitelocke and Justin Pierre.

That was in the 27th minute and George Town bounced back when Pierre headed home superbly for the equaliser five minutes later.

George Town were the better side in the second half, coming close on several occasions but it was Elite who took all the points when Gaza struck again late on. He got a yellow card for removing his jersey in celebration and that could prove costly if he is suspended for crucial matches. Elite don’t have a big squad and that was emphasised by the fact that little Jairo Sanchez played as centre back in the second half as cover for injured central defender Abijah Rivers.

Bodden Town’s youngsters took on the inconsistent Roma United next. Casey McLaughin hit a brilliant shot from the edge of the box in the second minute to give BT the perfect start. Jorronie McLean hit a second for BT soon after and in the second half established players Theron Wood and Kareem James wrapped up a 4-0 win.

The other matches were played at the Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay. Tigers beat Cayman Athletic 1-0 thanks to a goal by Miguel Simms. League leaders Scholars International surprised by drawing 0-0 with lowly Future.

There are no premier league matches this weekend because of international games. The Cayman Islands men’s national team play their final two World Cup Qualifier games against the Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo on Friday and the home leg at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on Monday. Cayman are bottom of Group A in the North, Central America and Caribbean Region Qualifiers having lost all four games so far.
