Festivities for Pirates Week are under way but youngsters can do something different on the diamond.
The next instalment of the Chicago White Sox camp is taking place this Monday, 14 November. The Field of Dreams facility in George Town will see a warm-up period (1-1.45pm) and clinic (2-6pm) for children age nine and above. An extra 8.30am-12noon session for kids eight years-old and under is also planned.
Overseeing the camp, which started on Sunday, is the Cayman Islands Little League and president Paul Gallagher states the goal is to focus on one skill.
“This camp will focus on hitting,” Gallagher said. “As part of our rotational instructional clinics, we’ll choose a fundamental skill that needs attention and watch the kids.
“With short clinics, it’s important to focus on this one segment of the game in order for them to gain confidence in themselves that they can do it.”
A steady part of the Cayman sports scene the last five years, the camps have taken place at various times of the year and attracted the likes of pitching guru Don Cooper, former pro Mike Huff and top youth coach Pete Caliendo. This time around the visiting instructors are Sam Zagorac and Marty Kobernus, both no strangers to Cayman after coming here for previous camps. Zagorac is a hitting and fielding instructor at the BullSox Training Academy while Kobernus is known as the ‘professor of pitching’ at the academy.
Gallagher states the camp will offer subtle differences for previous attendees.
“This is a great, fun opportunity to learn fundamentals from the guys who really know how to teach. We have a good number of players from the Fall Ball programme, who are interested in playing ball year round. This is great too for those who want to get back in the swing of things for the Spring programme. This is open to anyone interested in coaching or playing.
“Those who have gone through it before will not see the same things as before. We are working with the White Sox to offer smaller, more specialized training sessions focused on one skill set at a time. It’s improving and specialising and I believe every kid can benefit from taking part in the camp with an ex-Major League Baseball player.”
Registration for the camp is still open. The cost is $35. For more information e-mail [email protected]
