Unity shoots for togetherness

A notable netball competition is taking place during the Remembrance day public holiday in the Cayman Islands.

Unity netball club is hosting a fundraiser rally on Monday, 14 November at the New Testament Church court on North Sound Road in George Town. The rally will feature netball matches throughout the day from 9am until about 6pm.

Unity team manager and president Faye Green states the interest in the tournament is solid.

“We’ve had a lot of response from the clubs and churches,” Green said. “A lot of people are coming and wanting to practice. Things look promising, we’re motivated and we should be in for a good day on Monday.”

Food and drinks are slated to be sale and prizes are on offer. Trophies will be awarded for the top three teams with additional honours slated for categories like best shooter.

One of the goals for the tournament is to foster community spirit. Like many residents, members of the Unity club were dismayed after the string of five murders over nine days in September. All of the victims were younger than 29-years-old and the majority of cases were gang-style killings.

Green states the focus now is on togetherness.

“Our motive is fundraising for the netball club. The topic of the day is what can I do for my country to bring the youth together. Through this heap of violence we know the youth are scattered. So we want to motivate the public to improve our community.”

This is not the first time Unity has staged a community tournament. Unity helped New Testament Church stage a family netball night in April featuring the church’s mother and father of the year and players from various local teams.

News of the event comes ahead of the start of the 2011-2012 netball season this month. The annual opening parade is slated for 26 November at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. From there comes the next edition of the Cayman Islands Netball Association open league, the national women’s competition.

Green, who saw her Unity side struggle in both the A and B divisions, states preparations for the new campaign are going well.

“It’s been good. We’re at the church practicing along with Roma (the defending league champions). Turnout is great.”

A registration fee will be in effect for Monday’s tournament. For more information call Faye Green at 328-6681 or David Wilson at 328-2046 or Milton Clarke at 547-8402.
