Trip will help understand the industry
A group of students from Cayman Prep school is planning a fact-finding trip to the Brac.
This, they said, will help them gain insight into travel and tourism.
“The knowledge gain can give us a better understanding about the country in which we live in,” explained spokesman Erica Burke on behalf of the students.
“[This] will allow us to answer questions on our AS Travel and Tourism exam, which ask to refer to a specific real life example of which we are familiar. Also it will open our eyes to different career options for us to consider when looking at university courses, in the travel and tourism industry.
“In our travel and tourism class we have learned that tourism is vital to the local economy. If tourism figures are down one year it could mean disaster for the whole Island, impacting many local businesses, not only in the travel and tourism industry. The prosperity of the Island is almost completely dependent on tourism.”
Initial schedules have the students arriving in Cayman Brac on Friday, 13 January, and visiting the high school and the caves. On Saturday, activities could include snorkelling, kayaking, volleyball and a possible bonfire. Before leaving on Sunday, 15th, an Island tour is also pencilled in.
Sponsorship sought
To assist with the trip, the students are seeking sponsorship.
“We do not want the students to have to pay too costly fees because the trip’s overall cost is expensive and we decided if we could lower costs it would keep our fellow students interested in the trip and it would benefit everyone,” explained Ms Burke.
The students have already benefitted from the process, she added.
“Within our group we all have different roles, chairperson, coordinator, customer service representative, public relations representative, Finance representative and finally our head of Administration. All of our roles are very important and have come to be imperative to the planning of our trip.
“Organising this trip has really helped us to appreciate our parents and teacher for how they can do all the work involved and make it look so easy. As we start to look into bookings and passports and meal plans we realise that there is a huge amount of work that goes into planning a trip and that planning it for a whole class is incredibly difficult.”
