Peter Grant is on the cusp of another youth basketball championship.
His 7-1 Wolves are atop the boys division of the Appleby Under-19 Basketball League. The George Town native, in his second season with the club, states the reigning champions can win the league crown once again.
“The season is going good so far,” Grant said. “If we keep playing defence, we should come out with the championship. We can win the whole thing.”
Grant, 16, is in the midst of a Most Valuable Player-type season. Heading into this week he is the league leader in scoring (averaging 31.5 points per game), passing (4.1 assists per contest) and free throw shooting (52.5 per cent). Grant is coming off a decent outing against 7-1 Bodden Town when he posted 24 points, eight rebounds and nine steals.
BT would win that contest by 15 points to split the season series a game apiece. The side got three double-doubles from big men Travis Barnes (29 points, 12 rebounds), Christopher Collins (17 points, 20 rebounds) and Shaquille Heath (11 points, 20 rebounds).
Grant, in his fourth season playing U19 basketball, states BT are arguably the biggest threat to a championship.
“BT and the Grand Pavilion Shockwaves are the biggest threats. We need to be prepared for them. We know they’re trying to prepare for us. Travis (Barnes), Philip Webb and Rashaad Powery-Saunds are good players. With no pressure, they can score easy and frustrate us. They’re the best on their respective teams and you can’t make them score too much.”
The Wolves play their regular season finale on Tuesday, 29 November, at 7.30pm. The green warriors tackle 2-6 Wesleyan Christian Academy at the Cayman Islands Basketball Association court off Eastern Avenue. Wesleyan are looking to rebound from a heartbreaking 66-60 loss to the 5-4 Shockwaves.
Tuesday’s other contest pits 0-8 John Gray High School against BT at 6pm. John Gray are coming off a 99-41 beating by 4-4 Esso.
From here, the playoffs are slated to begin next Tuesday, 6 December, at 6pm. At this point the seeding would pit the top-ranked Wolves against the number four Esso Blazers while second seed BT tackles the third ranked Shockwaves. The finals are expected to take place on Tuesday, 13 December.
