The 40-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted robbery, police said.
The man allegedly tried to hold up a security guard who was returning to his armoured car in the parking lot of the Savannah Fosters store Friday night. The incident led to a tussle between the security guard who was protecting the vehicle and the would-be robber.
According to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, the guard was leaving Fosters in the Countryside Shopping Centre around 7.30pm Friday carrying cash in a bag.
Police said a man approached the guard carrying what looked like a handgun and demanded the bag. Following the short struggle, the suspect ran off empty-handed.
Nothing was taken, no shots were fire and no one was hurt.
“The guard was shaken in the attack but not physically injured,” said RCIPS Chief Inspector Frank Owens.
The suspect was not found after a police search of the area. The man is described as being around 5’9” tall, with light brown skin and of a medium build – possibly in his mid-40s. He was wearing blue jeans, a black t-shirt and a black ball cap.
