Dashing on sandy beat

They’re headed here from all directions for one of the most popular running events on the calendar. From England, Ireland, Cuba, Canada, the United States and other points as yet unknown.

They are repeat and first-time visitors who are arriving to join residents in the fourteenth annual Dashing Thru the Sand Beach run/walk on Boxing Day, Monday 26 December.

It is a combination of competitive action and a huge group of participants experiencing the joie de vivre of the Christmas spirit. Many Dashing regulars, visitors and residents who make annual entry as a part of their holiday tradition, are wending their way again from the beach just north of Hemingway’s up to the finish at the Tiki Beach Restaurant.

First-timers will also be in the mix, as each year new entries are registered, as holiday celebrants discover the Cayman Islands for the first time. It is always part of the enjoyment to note who has travelled the farthest and which extended family has the most members taking part.

The registrants come from far and wide.

As usual, the fastest four male and female finishers will receive awards. They and all other participants, will be eligible for a myriad of random prizes.

The race is not always for the swift, as the special awards for the slowest male and female are much-coveted.

Action starts at 7.30am and the conga line of walkers/runners, splashers/dashers, most clad in unique John Broad-designed event shirts, will hightail it toward breakfast which awaits at Tiki Beach.

Registration will be conducted under the Hyatt Bridge on Boxing Day morning from 6.30 until 7.15am. Entry fee is $25. However, participants are greatly encouraged by the Phoenix Athletic Club, organisers of the event, to download the entry form at www.caymanactive.com, complete the information needed and forward to [email protected] Event shirts will then be delivered to participants.
