Visiting volunteer dies
An American visitor from Indiana died after collapsing in the heat of East End. The victim, 21-year-old Daniel Hamilton, was here as a volunteer with the Blue Iguana recovery programme. Local police, fire and rescue personnel came together to try to save Hamilton, who was deep within bush land when he suffered hyperthermia (heat stroke).
Government deal with Dart
The Cayman Islands government and the Dart Group signed a Heads of Terms agreement to resolve the George Town landfill. The deal, the largest ever reached between government and a private sector entity, sees Dart committing US$415 million over the next five years with $200m being spent in the next two years. There is no debt or cash outlay required by government for the deal.
2011 Budget sees surplus
It was announced that Cayman’s budget for the upcoming year contains a forecast $3.68m operating surplus. The surplus figure is significantly less than the $12.1m originally stated by Premier McKeeva Bush. The Premier would defend his findings as well as several key decisions such as not cutting Civil Service jobs.
Premier under investigation
Cayman’s opposition political party stated that Premier McKeeva Bush was the subject of a police investigation for over a year. Opposition Leader Alden McLaughlin stated he and North Side MLA Ezzard Miller had met with Cayman Islands Governor Duncan Taylor about the matter.
Premier Bush addressed the investigation claim at a job rally staged by the United Democratic Party government. More than 200 people would march in front of the Legislative Assembly calling for Premier Bush to resign.
