Tiger Woods has announced who he believes will be the players he has to beat if he is to have a successful 2012.
The 14-time Major winner has suffered with injuries and a lack of form for the last couple of years, but hinted at something like a return to his best when winning the Chevron World Challenge in California a month ago.
Woods, 36, will be in the United Arab Emirates to compete in the HSBC Abu Dhabi Golf Championship from January 26-29 as he bids to get the new year off to a good start. But he will have to beat the new guard of golf, including current world No 1 and US and Europe’s top earner last year, Luke Donald.
“There are a lot of golfers who have had a great couple of years and many young guys who will be looking to keep us older guys at bay,” Woods said. “Luke Donald has been fantastically consistent and obviously Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood will be looking to build on all they’ve achieved. Ryo Ishikawa is another young player I like a lot.
“I am looking to get off to a fast start in Abu Dhabi and keep building from there. Now that I am healthy, I feel I can keep building my game and confidence week on week, much like I did at the end of (last) year — from the Australian Open to the Presidents Cup to, finally, a win in California.”
Woods finished third at the Australian Open, and then delivered the clinching point for the American team in the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.
