It may be a new year and a new season but the same old juggernaut of dominoes remains.
East End Mystical Youth are still the top squad in the Cayman Islands Domino Association national league. The veteran club is currently 3-0 and in first place heading into 2012.
Under the direction of team manager Billy McLaughlin, East End have not lost since the start of the competition last year. Among the notable players are Fred McLaughlin, Brainard McLaughlin and Brent Greene.
Only two other sides have winning records at the moment. Team DLK are 3-1 behind Greg Hurlstone while John Jobson and team Archies are third at 2-1. Fourth through sixth place features clubs with 1-2 marks. Rookie club Sea Inn features aspiring talent Patrick Beersingh, veterans Island All Stars have Janet Hislop and Singh’s Roti Shop sport talents like Niron Mitchell.
Team Kelly’s, featuring players like Jason Simms, is seventh with a 1-1 mark. In the cellar are newcomers Eastern Star, who are 0-3 in spite of talented slammers like Jeff Welcome.
Half of those sides will look to start 2012 on the right foot. The league resumes play after the holiday break this Sunday, 8 January. Kelly’s Bar in West Bay features Kelly’s up against All Stars while Archies Bar sees home team Archies face off against Singh’s. Matches start from roughly 2pm.
