Online poll: Most still make New Year’s resolutions

Just fewer than 60 per cent of the respondents to last week’s cayCompass.com poll made a New Year’s resolution, with almost two-thirds of them saying their resolution was to lose weight.

The one-week poll received 488 total responses with 199 people – 40.8 per cent – saying they didn’t make a New Year’s resolution.

“What’s the point; I never stick to them anyway,” said one person.

Of the 289 people who made New Year’s resolutions, 190 of them – 38.9 per cent of the total or 65.7 per cent of those making resolutions – said it was to lose weight.

“And to find a job paying a wage that allows me to can take care of my family and live the Cayman Dream,” said one person.

Twenty-nine people – 5.9 per cent of the total – said their New Year’s resolution was to give up drinking alcohol for a while and 20 people – 4.1 per cent of the total – said giving up smoking was their New Year’s resolution.

Fifty people – 10.3 per cent – made other New Year’s resolutions.

Those resolutions included:

“Chill, de-stress and not get angry.”

“Limit the amount of coffee I drink.”

“Pay down credit cards.”

“To get fit.”

“Be a better person.”

“To become healthier.”

“To give my heart and soul to God.”

“Start my own business.”

“To work on my relationship with my spouse more.”

“To leave Cayman and start a family.”

“Read more books.”

“To find a husband.”

“Not to sweat the small things in life.”

“To sink Cayman as a tax haven.”

“I want to start building our house extension. At the moment we just have 420 square feet.”

“To be debt free.”

“Work less and play more.”

“To work towards an overall healthier lifestyle.”

“Find a new job.”

“To vote out the UDP.”

“Accept God in my life.”

“Live today now and tomorrow when it comes.”

Five people said their New Year’s resolution was to leave the Cayman Islands.

“To find a job abroad,” said one of those people. “There just ain’t none here.”

Several other people said their New Year’s resolution was to stop making New Year’s resolutions.

“Where do we get the notion that resolutions are tied to the beginning of the year?” asked one of those people. “They can be made with each passing day. I’ll make mine and maintain it daily.”
