A local runner has earned fresh props in the US.
Cayman Islands sprinter Kemar Hyman has earned an automatic berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Indoor Championship, finishing the 60 metres at the Auburn Invitational in a personal-best time of 6.56 seconds. Hyman, 22, was running for Florida State University.
The time equalled Cayman’s national 60m record, which had been held by Kareem Streete-Thompson since 2004. Streete-Thompson was a volunteer assistant coach for the Seminoles last season. Hyman also came within .01 of matching Maurice Mitchell’s Florida State school record.
“I just wanted to compete; I raced to win,” said Hyman, who earned All-American honours last season outdoors when he led off Florida State’s NCAA championship 4x100m relay team.
