Students get practical insight into the regular working world

Students at Prospect Primary School recently were offered a world of choices in career fields during a careers day exhibition held at the school.

“For the six years that I have been attending the careers day exhibition since it began this was the best one so far,” said Prospect Primary Year 6 deputy head girl Gordyn Thompson.

Ms Thompson, who has hopes of becoming a dentist, said there were a lot more career fields in the hall from which she could make a choice if she wanted to do something else.

In the main hall, students were exposed to work sectors including nursing, pharmaceuticals, phlebotomy, nutrition and radiography. There were also representatives from the fields of veterinary medicine, healthcare, public works, utilities, banking, fire services, air transport, agriculture, cosmetology and plumbing.

“The career day coordinated by staff counsel, gave students the opportunity to learn about the work fields in the community and prepared them for a work future,” said Principal Gloria Bell. The exhibition, especially for the Year 6 students, showcased over 25 different companies from 9am until 12.30pm.”

Students were also treated to an informative demonstration in detecting and apprehending narcotic carriers by the Customs Narcotics K-9 unit.

Students watched with mouths wide open in astonishment as Customs K-9 dog handler Cassius Anglin and partner Scooby with the assistance of officer Don Parson detected, spread out and handcuff a person carrying narcotics. The demonstration was so vivid the room of students went silent until Officer Tina Campbell reminded them it was just a demonstration and the decoy was an officer.

Annie’s School of Beauty Arts and Technology owner Annie Marie Logan told students of the importance of personal hygiene.

“Beauty care is not just for girls, but boys as well when it came to keep up with your personal hygiene,” she said during a manicure session with a young male student. “Not everyone will become a doctor or lawyer, there are numerous vocational careers that are well paid if you become certified.”

Also popular with students was the pet grooming station and the Agriculture Department booth which displayed a collection of local produce, plants and preserved insects.

“I liked the electronic booth,” said deputy head boy Charles Panton.

Mr. Panton, who hopes to someday become an accountant or avian veterinarian, said, “Electricity would have been quite amazing in the 1960s with so much power and the science booth and the Agriculture Department display of produce, plants and preserved insects was also pretty cool.”
