Usually the second half of a given year is the busiest time for Cayman Islands darts.
A number of tournaments take place and international competitions are part of the summer schedule. In 2012 there is renewed focus on national team qualification, in preparation for this year’s Caribbean Championships.
Cayman Islands Darts Association President Paul Anglin spoke about the current state of local darts.
“Our national league is on right now with games on Wednesday nights,” Anglin said. “The venues are the Grand Caymanian resort, PD’s Pub, Mango Tree and Doghouse. We’re doing national team trials in preparation for the Caribbean Championships in Belize 20-30 June.
“We also started the Trevor Lloyd Cup and we’re already down to five teams heading into the second round. That competition will wrap up by about the first week of June, just before we head off to the Caribbean Championships.”
The 2012 Caribbean Darts Championships is slated to be held in Belize City, Belize this summer. Numerous countries are expected to take part in the 20th annual tournament. In years past, the competition attracted over 200 participants from roughly 10 nations including Barbados, Jamaica and Puerto Rico.
Cayman has competed for a number of years. Cayman placed fourth overall in Abaco, Bahamas in 2010, matching their best ever finish from the 2008 event in Trinidad. That same year saw one of the sport’s biggest highlight as Caymanian Edsell Haylock became the Caribbean singles champion.
In order to attend this year, the darts association is putting on a number of fundraisers. One of them is a fish fry all day on Ash Wednesday, 22 February, starting from 10am at Public Beach. The cost is $10 with alcoholic beverages, soft drinks and various snacks also on sale. Interestingly, other sports are expected to be highlighted including volleyball and dominoes.
