St. Ignatius church clearly have some of talented volleyball players.
Often called Catholic, St. Ignatius emerged the winners of the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation 2011-2012 church league. The competition began last October and wrapped up last Saturday at the University College of the Cayman Islands multipurpose hall.
Catholic was one of 10 teams in the event, with the Bethany Spikers placing second and First Baptist Church coming third. A youth squad also took part in the form of the Wesleyan Christian Academy girls volleyball team. Matches, which were co-ed, took place at the Airport Park and First Baptist Gym in front of sizeable crowds. LIME was the main sponsor of the competition, with First Baptist also lending immense support.
The church league was a very popular event many years ago and quite a number of people were asking when the event would return. The league will now become an annual event on the local volleyball calendar and is part of the federation’s grass roots programme. The primary objective of this event is to encourage Christian fellowship amongst people in the local community regardless of religion, nationality, colour or race while promoting the sport of volleyball in the Cayman Islands.
It comes at a time when our society is experiencing so much trouble, especially amongst our youth and people need alternative activities to express themselves. It’s an excellent opportunity for our teenagers to get involved and use sport to promote a healthy lifestyle and positive behaviour.
The federation wishes to thank LIME for their continued support as well as First Baptist for allowing use of their facilities during times of inclement weather.
The federation has recently started a very active junior national volleyball programme with kids ages 10-18 practicing volleyball 9am-12pm each Saturday morning at the UCCI gym as well as Monday evenings at the Public Beach. The objective of this programme is to develop an elite group of young volleyball players to compete locally and abroad.
The ultimate goal is to send younger athletes to compete in international events such as the 2013 Island Games, which will be held in Bermuda, as well as other regional events. Some of these same athletes will also be offered a golden opportunity to represent Cayman at home by competing in the popular NORCECA beach volleyball tour, which Cayman is known to be the most favoured host country. The future of volleyball in the Cayman Islands is looking very bright as the federation strives to develop and promote the sport locally. Look out for more new and exciting events coming soon.
