Free concert at Camana Bay this Saturday night

Don your dancing shoes and get ready to move, Musicians’ Showcase is here again, say Camana Bay.

“Join us on The Crescent for a free concert featuring local artists Catch O the Day, Little Magic & Friends and Cory Allenger. This month’s showcase will benefit The Cayman Islands United World College Fund, which raises funds for scholarships granted to exceptional Caymanian students to attend one of 13 United World Colleges worldwide.

“Come learn more about the organisation and show your support for a worthy cause,” they tell us.

We might just do that, from 6pm to 9pm at the Crescent on Saturday, 11 February, to be exact.

“This is the first time that UWC Cayman Islands will be involved,” explains Aubrey Bodden.

“One of our current students, Jennifer Moseley, has arranged for our local organisation and her community service project in Swaziland to be the featured charity for the February event.

“We will have a display booth with information about Jennifer’s initiative to bring running water to the Sobhiyozo preschool in Mbabane, Swaziland, which is run by the Waterford KaMhlaba UWC of Southern Africa and where she has been volunteering. We will also be promoting the United World Colleges, our local national committee, and the recruitment process that is currently underway for Caymanian scholars”

Art on display

The regular music and art showcases are organised in conjunction with Oneworld Productions and there will be art by students in a community outreach programme with the National Gallery on display and for sale.

United World Colleges is the only global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world – selected from within their own countries on personal merit, irrespective of race, religion, politics and ability to pay – with the explicit aim of fostering peace and international understanding.

At each of the United World Colleges schools and colleges an average of seventy different nationalities are represented at any one time. Embracing the plethora of diversities and many nationalities present is an important feature of college life, helping students to explore and develop an international appreciation. Academic achievements are put into perspective with a demanding mix of community engagement, international affairs, physical activities and creative pursuits.

Nelson Mandela is honorary president of the organisation.
