Camana Bay is plunging ahead

Swimmers of all ages and abilities are invited to join the Camana Bay Aquatic Club for a three-part series of family-friendly open water events.

Taking place over the course of six weeks, the series is open to the community and is a great way to learn a vital life skill, enjoy a great workout, get wet and have fun.

“It’s open to everyone,” said coach Katie Lambert. “We want to encourage swimmers of all levels to come out and participate in local events.”

On Saturday 18 February, young participants will enjoy a 200 metres Lollipop Dash, for swimmers 10 and under who are new to open water swimming. Other events include a 400m sea swim and a 400m water walk where participants walk through the water at waist-height. This innovative race is for less confident swimmers who still want to get some exercise and enjoy the open water experience.

Throughout the series, the sea swim and water walk will increase in distance as swimmers build confidence and rise to a fun challenge. On Saturday 10 March, the second event in the series features a 200m Lollipop Dash, followed by a 600m Sea Swim and a 600m Water Walk. The series concludes on Saturday 31 March with a 200m Lollipop Dash, and a rewarding 800m Sea Swim and 800m Water Walk.

Coach Katie said the series will allow swimmers to build open water confidence in a friendly environment. It also gives others in the community an opportunity to test the waters of competitive swimming. “We want swimmers to come out and try a race, and see what the sport has to offer.”

The Camana Bay Aquatic Centre Open Water Series is the perfect way to kick-start training for Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association’s 800m Open Water Race this summer. All races will start at Governor’s Beach and competitors will swim north to finish on or before Public Beach. There will also be a host of random prize draws and complimentary post-race refreshments at each event.

The Camana Bay Aquatic Club marked its first-year anniversary in December. In just over a year, the club has grown to almost 150 members, spanning ages 5 to 15. The club provides a positive environment for young swimmers to hone their skills and achieve their goals. “Being involved with a swim team teaches swimmers the values of teamwork and individual goal setting,” said coach Katie. “And you’re learning a life skill. Swimming is a sport for people of all ages and we hope that swimmers fall in love with it and swim for life.”

The club is based at the Camana Bay Sports Complex and is one of two swim clubs on island; Stingray Swim Club is based at the Lions Aquatic Centre. Both clubs are governed by the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association.

Registration is $30 for a Series Package (all three races); CI$90 for a Family Series Package (2 adults and 2 children, including all races); and CI$15 per individual race. All swimmers will receive a CBAC Swim Cap, and those who sign up for the Series or Family Package will each receive a CBAC Open Water Series T-Shirt. Registration can be made at the event, online at caymanactive.com or at The Discovery Centre in Camana Bay.
