A group of hockey lovers recently represented the Cayman Islands abroad.
The Cayman Breakaway ice hockey team competed at the 2012 World Pond Hockey Championships in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, Canada. Cayman went against dozens of teams from Canada, the US, England, Puerto Rico and Singapore over the weekend.
Representing Cayman would be Tim Derksen, Norm Klein, Darren Lawrence, Bill Messer and Joe Stasiuk. Among the original members (who are now retired) are Patrick Agemian and Martin Goschl. Nearly all have a huge presence in local hockey as many of their sons play in the youth roller hockey league at Kings Sports Centre and they coach (and in some cases sponsor) teams.
Cayman did not have the greatest of showings as they did not advance to the playoffs. They were in a five-team group featuring two Canadian teams, a New York squad and a side from Massachusetts. In the past, Cayman has been among the top 32 teams in the competition. Interestingly, Puerto Rico fielded one of the top units in the tournament.
The championships, which feature a four-on-four outdoor format, were first held in 2002 and Cayman began competing on a regular basis in 2005. Over 8,000 people typically attend the matches, which take place every February.
