Cartagena will teach local starlets

A noted international instructor is helping Cayman’s junior volleyball scene.

Regional instructor Juan Cartagena of the North, Central American and Caribbean Confederation and the International Volleyball Federation is holding seminars this week with youth players.

The sessions are part of a youth volleyball clinic staged by the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation with sponsorship from Domino’s Pizza. The clinic seeks to get youngsters aged 10-18 like Felicia Connor, 17, to a higher skill level.

The University College of the Cayman Islands multipurpose hall stages the clinic 22-25 February. Friday’s session runs 8:30am-5pm (kids will be transported to the beach for 2:30pm) and Saturday’s finale is at 9am-12pm. The sessions are free.

Assisting Cartagena are Cayman’s junior national coach Andrea Williams and assistant coach Davison Ruwende. For the record, Cartagena has travelled across the Caribbean in recent months helping to develop national programmes.

This week’s clinics come after Cayman’s national teams missed out on qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics. Both the male and female squads were eliminated in the semi-finals of the NORCECA Continental Cup. The sides were looking to advance to the finals in Mexico after advancing past the quarterfinal stage in Grand Cayman last year.
