On the hunt for invasive lionfish

It’s time to take those trident spears underwater and hunt some lionfish.

Lionfish hunts are being organised throughout February and March to help cut down on the number of the invasive species on Cayman’s reefs.

Local dive operations, along with the Cayman Islands Tourism Association, are offering divers, who are certified lionfish cullers, $10 lionfish hunt dives.

The hunts are being sponsored by Foster’s Food Fair IGA, which also sells lionfish at its seafood counters.

The first in the latest series of culls began with two dives on Saturday, 18 February by Divers Down and Indepth Watersports. The next will be held on Saturday, 25 February at 2pm by Tortuga Divers/Red Sail, followed by two dives on Sunday, 26 February at Divetech at 1.15pm and by Red Sail West at 2pm.
