An all-day Football Extravaganza and Family Fun Day organised by the Save Our Youth Foundation proved a huge success for the scores of youngsters who participated.
The event, held last Saturday at the TE McField Annex, was aimed at bringing as many young people as possible together for a friendly competition. More importantly, the organisers also wanted to provide a forum where they could discuss various issues affecting youngsters, including drugs, violence, prison and gang-related activities. The event was coordinated to educate Cayman’s youth about the importance of making positive choices in their lives.
There were 12 teams, comprising Under-17 boys, U-17 girls and U-15 boys, from Bodden Town, Elite, Tigers, Academy, Sunset, East End United, Scholars, Future and John Gray High School.
Save Our Youth Acting President Iris Stoner said: “The event was very inspiring. This is one of the many programmes we hope to introduce to address the numerous issues affecting our youth. I must also say that Save Our Youth do not have all the answers to the many problems affecting our youth; however, as an organisation we can only do our part. Currently, far too many students are dropping out of school as a result of drugs, teenage pregnancy and violence, so it is vitally necessary as a youth empowerment organisation to stress the importance of making positive choices.”
George Roper, founder of the SOY Foundation, said: “It is important that everyone understands what this organisation hopes to achieve. We want to positively transform a new generation of young people and inspire them, especially those from the most challenging circumstances, so they will discover their own self-worth and begin a process of realizing their greatest potential. Save Our Youth intends to provide the youth of the Cayman Islands with the tools to succeed and lead meaningful lives of contribution. How great will it be to empower our youth to become leaders and architects of their own destiny.”
“I had the opportunity to talk to youths throughout the day about the importance of making positive choices in their lives while warning them about the dangers of drugs, gangs, violence and prison.
“The SOY Foundation congratulates all the young people who participated in the event and considers every team a winner. We also would like to say a special thank you to all of the event’s sponsors: Department of Sports, Cayman Referee Association, Roper’s, Sign Solutions, Public Works Department, iNews, Paint Pros, Champion House II, Kirk Beverages, Mango Tree, Island Taste, Heston, Chad Chapman, Welly’s Cool Spot, Captain’s Bakery, KFC, China Village, Maedac Supply, Bodden Beverages and It’s Your Party.”
