Volunteers are the lifeblood of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. They save and change lives through basic life-saving skills, such as CPR as well as disaster preparedness and response, raising vital funds and running the shops. Without them, the group simply would not be able to deliver our services, which help hundreds of thousands of people in crisis every year.
The commitment of these volunteers, their unwavering determination and ability to “get the job done” and to “get the job done right”, was at the forefront of the Cayman Islands Red Cross this weekend with its’ annual celebration of the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
On 18 February, more than 20 people came together to celebrate at the restaurant in the Alexander Hotel in Cayman Brac.
The evening commenced with Director Jondo Obi highlighting the successes of Cayman Brac’s branch for 2011. Mrs. Obi also drew attention to the uniqueness of the Red Cross movement, a family drawn together by its’ seven fundamental principles – namely, humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
Andrew McLaughlin, chairman of the Cayman Islands Red Cross, shared his vision for the Red Cross in 2012.
He also thanked the volunteers for their dedication and reminded them of the Red Cross’s continuous commitment to all three of the Cayman Islands.
Isabelle Doré, coordinator for the Sister Islands, gave a brief overview of the key objectives for 2012.
Among those goals are to bring back the “A Star is Born” karaoke fundraiser event and make sure Red Cross’ first aid volunteers are present whenever there is an event on the Sister Islands.
The peak of the evening was the presentation of a recognition gift to M. Valentine Huntington and Annette Bodden for their hard work, positive outlook, cheery disposition and availability throughout the year 2011.
After the successful completion of 50 years of providing services to the people of the Cayman Islands, the local chapter of the Red Cross continues to seek volunteers with a variety of skills, including fundraising, finance, legal and marketing.
