Megan’s marking reels in Roma

All Stars netball club are still on target for the B division championship.

The squad, sponsored by Cayman National Bank, took down Roma B 35-23 last Saturday. The Cayman Islands Netball Association open league match took place at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts.

Megan Hurlston, 15, aided All Stars’ defensive efforts and states although the victory was good, her team has to be more composed.

“I think for our team we should have calmed ourselves down, slow down the game and make proper decisions,” Hurlston said. “We needed to communicate with each other and control how we function together.”

The John Gray High School student, who was born and raised in George Town, has a point. Roma played well in spurts behind its veteran offensive unit of Goal Shooter Jahzenia Thomas, Goal Attack Kristie Hurlston, Wing Attack Avril Myers and Centre Samantha Dennis. The side stayed in it defensively with Wing Defence Roxanne Walton, Goal Defence Julia Watling and Goal Keeper Benieca Thompson. Stacy-Ann Smith was the lone sub.

However, the AS offence was on point all game with Karen Smith-James (GS), Tishelle Logan (GA), Gabriella Ebanks (WA) and Charlotte Sheperd (C). The rest of the AS roster saw Jane Sinclair (WD), Benecia Mullings (GD), Kristina Bush (GK) with Hurlston, Rashana Singh, Marsha Allen and Leslie Ann Bernard as subs.

The statistics sheet for the match shows AS were out front 12-5 and 8-6 in the first half before going on to victory with a 10-7 third quarter edge. The fourth and final quarter was a 5-5 tie.

With the victory AS now improve to 3-3 while Roma are still winless at 0-5. AS play this Saturday, 10 March against Unity A with Roma B not in action again until 22 March. To their credit, Roma players like Avril Myers are still optimistic about this season.

“I’m back in the picture now, I’m healthy but I’m just unfit,” Myers said. “We’ve only been out there as a team for a few games. It’s the first time we’re all playing together and we’re trying to retain the title. We’re going hard for it.

“We got to up our match training, get fit and come back for the title good.”
