Cayman’s national beach volleyball teams had a good showing against international competition this weekend.
Shervin Rankin and Richard Campbell would advance to the quarterfinals for the fourth staging of the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation tour opener on Grand Cayman’s Public Beach.
The duo were eliminated on Saturday by Dominican Republic youngsters German Recio and Luis Adames 2-0, with the set scores reading 21-8 and 21-16 in favour of the visitors. Earlier in the day, Rankin and Campbell completed group play by finishing second in Pool A at 2-1 (their lone defeat at the hands of Puerto Rico). They would edge countrymen Philippe Deslandes and Duncan Hamann 2-1 (11-21, 21-10, 15-11) for a playoff berth.
Deslandes and Hamann ended their tournament at 1-2, good enough for third place in their group, after registering a 2-0 (21-7, 21-11) victory over the US Virgin Islands pairing of Jerall Tyron and Hector Belardo. Their other loss came to Puerto Rico 0-2 (18-21, 16-21).
On the women’s side, Jennifer Bily and Cristin Alexander played the opening stages under a round-robin format. They lost to Trinidad and Tobago’s Ayana Dyette and Elki Phillip 0-2 (17-21, 20-22) on Friday before beating Jamaica’s Nardarake Hutchinson and Tshai Williams 2-0 (21-16, 24-22). They would be knocked out on Saturday by losing to El Salvador’s Diana Romero and Marcela Avalos 1-2 (23-21, 14-21, 12-15).
The last male pairing of Andrew Gordon and Olney Thompson were eliminated in group play over in Pool C. They had a 1-2 record after losing to Trinidad’s Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams 0-2 (16-21, 20-22) and Canada’s Samuel Schachter and Maverick Hatch 0-2 (4-21, 10-21). Gordon and Thompson beat Antigua’s Collin Thomas and Angus Gittens 2-1 (22-20, 19-21, 16-14) on Saturday to place third.
The semi-finals and finals took place on Sunday night.
