Rainout stalls racers

Autocross enthusiasts will have to wait a few weeks to get their fix.

The Cayman Motorsports Association will stage the next race in the monthly Time Attack series on 27 May. The Progressive Loop in George Town will serve as venue from about 1pm.

That meet will be the association’s second of the year after inclement weather wiped out April’s event last weekend. The usual stomping grounds were ankle deep in water and with no signs of the rain letting up, the decision was made to postpone the event. The association apologizes for the late cancellation as it was the second event in a row to end up rained out.

The hype around the sport has intensified with the introduction of head-to-head racing. Basically, drivers compete against each other on the track for the latter stages of each meet.

February saw the first event for the 2012 season take place without incident as 20 racers competed. The usual suspects dominated the podium as Jimel McLean won the Two Wheel Drive division and street battle crown in a Honda Civic. Keith ‘Speedy’ Tibbetts III used his Valvoline Impreza Sti to win the Unlimited division and its accompanying battle segment.

It should be noted that there will be a “Test and Tune Day” on 20 May prior to the Time Attack meet.
