The phenomenal, recording-breaking success of the 2011 Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon has resulted in some much appreciated funding for several worthy organisations on the Island.
The Cayman Islands Cadet Corps and the Cancer Society are the official beneficiaries of proceeds from the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, which runs every first Sunday of December. The 2011 race netted $4,200 for the Cadets and $2,000 for the Cancer Society.
In addition, a few runners made their participation in the marathon more meaningful by raising funds for other organisations in the community that rely on the benevolence of the public.
Veteran marathoner Derek Haines raised $33,000 for Cayman Islands Hospice and the youth rugby programme while the Cayman Islands Red Cross took in a few thousand dollars courtesy of several runners celebrating the organisation’s 50th anniversary in the Cayman Islands.
James Murray also used the marathon to add a few hundred dollars more to the $17,000 plus that he raised for the Cayman Islands Diabetes Association in his 100-mile run around Cayman the week before.
“The amount of the donations we give to the Cadets and the Cancer Society is based on the amount of registrations received so the more runners we get, the more money we are able to give,” said Rhonda Kelly, Race Director.
“We broke the 1,000-runner mark in 2011 which was so exciting and we are delighted that we were able to share this achievement with these great organisations. We look forward to giving much more money to these charities in 2012 as the race continues to grow.”
The Cadets are hosting the Caribbean Cadets Camp in Cayman this summer and will be using the funds to help with the organisation and execution of the camp, according to Acting Commandant Bobeth O’Garro.
Cadets from countries around the region, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados are coming to Cayman for the camp and the Corps is fundraising to put on a first-class event.
